Das erste Mal habe ich Joseph Beuys auf der Venedig Biennale 1976 getroffen.
Er war gerade dabei seine Installation aufzubauen. Und davon konnte ich Fotos machen.
Das letzte Mal habe ich Joseph Beuys auf der Ausstellung „Kunst ist Kapital“ in der Galerie Hans Mayer, Düsseldorf gesehen. Damals unterschrieb er auf einem 100 D-Mark Schein, den ich leider später verschenkt habe.
1988 habe ich drei Ausstellungen mit „Multiples“ und Zeichnungen von Beuys in Houston, Chicago und Los Angeles gemacht inklusive von Vorträgen über den Unterschied zwischen Beuys und Andy Warhol, den ich auch persönlich kannte. Die Arbeiten von Beuys hatte ich bei Jörg Schellmann und Bernd Klüser gekauft.
Nun, da dieses Jahr ein Beuys-Jahr ist, wollte ich doch noch eine Ausstellung mit meinen Künstlern im bildnerischen Dialog mit Beuys machen.

Mit Joseph Beuys werden im Allgemeinen eher Aktionskunst und „documenta“ als Schultafeln und Schule verbunden, auch wenn in seinem Werk eine pädagogische Dimension aufscheint, die bereits aus unterschiedlichen Blickwinkeln beleuchtet wurde. Das Pädagogische zeigt sich in Person wie Werk, wobei das künstlerische Schaffen von Joseph Beuys so eng wie bei kaum einem anderen Künstler mit seinem Leben verwoben ist. So kann auf der einen Seite die Lehrtätigkeit von Beuys an der Kunstakademie Düsseldorf selbst als Kunst angesehen werden, während sich auf der anderen Seite in der Tätigkeit des Künstlers Beuys und in seinem künstlerischen Oeuvre pädagogische Züge aufzeigen lassen. Im Folgenden soll es nicht um den Akademielehrer, sondern um die pädagogischen Dimensionen im Wirken des Künstlers Beuys gehen, der mit seinen spektakulären Aktionen, ungewöhnlichen Materialien und seinem erweiterten Verständnis von Kunst als einer der wichtigsten Künstler des 20. Jahrhunderts gilt.

I met Joseph Beuys for the first time at the 1976 Venice Biennale.
He was just about to set up his installation. And I was able to take photos of it.
The last time I saw Joseph Beuys was at the “Art is Capital” exhibition in the Hans Mayer Gallery, Düsseldorf. At that time he signed a 100 D-Mark note, which I unfortunately gave away later.
In 1988 I did three exhibitions with “Multiples” and drawings by Beuys in Houston, Chicago and Los Angeles, including lectures on the difference between Beuys and Andy Warhol, whom I also knew personally. I bought Beuys' work from Jörg Schellmann and Bernd Klüser.
Now that this year is a Beuys year, I wanted to do an exhibition with my artists in a visual dialogue with Beuys.

Joseph Beuys is generally more associated with action art and “documenta” than school boards and school, even if an educational dimension emerges in his work that has already been examined from different perspectives. The educational aspect shows itself in person like work, whereby the artistic work of Joseph Beuys is more closely interwoven with his life than with almost any other artist. On the one hand, Beuys' teaching activity at the Düsseldorf Art Academy can itself be viewed as art, while on the other hand, pedagogical traits can be demonstrated in the activity of the artist Beuys and in his artistic oeuvre. The following is not about the academy teacher, but about the educational dimensions of the work of the artist Beuys, who, with his spectacular actions, unusual materials and his expanded understanding of art, is considered one of the most important artists of the 20th century.
